§. Place of Posology in the field of art and science

Body and mind Bodies and minds under the one or the other of these
By these two appellations are designated and distinguished
two classes two subject matters the two classes or say aggregates of consideration under within one or
other of what every

or 1
Beings are
1. Matter,
2. Mind

Matter and mind — appellations these by one
or other of which all beings are wont in use to be designated

or 2
Per some, to the sign
mind corresponds
no being signified

An opinion entertained by some thinking men is
that to the appellation mind sign composed of the word
mind there exists not any subject matter signified

or 3
Per them, sole beings
bodies, of which some
have properties the aggregate
of which is
mind; others, not.

According to them is but by the word body is designated
whatsoever has existence. But of bodies some there are in which
may be observed and distinguished certain properties for the designation of to the aggregate
of which the term mind is wont to be employed;
other bodies others there are in which no such properties have been
observed

If the one first conception be the correct one, beings are either
bodies or minds will be the proper proposition, if the other, bodies
are either endued or unendued or endued with mind

4
Which conception is
correct belongs not to
the design of this
work to enquire
Sole reason for mentioning
it, fear lest a
reader should suppose
that truth as to
matters belonging to
posology depend
upon this

Which of these opposite opinions be the correct one — and
the one or the other of them will it any rate be the correct one — it belongs
not to the design of the present work to enquire. The only reason for
thus bringing the second to view is — the apprehension lest by seeing
the first opinion thus held up to view a false one accord in the view of the matter the truth as whatsoever comes after it
should be regarded as depending on it, and will therefore be
found erroneous and uninstructive.
