Posology

The habitable part of the neighborhood of that
river was every year as it continues to be
covered with water for a considerable
length of time at stated periods. During
that length of time it was not
possible to ascertain either by the eye
or by the hand as employed in mensuration
the form nor therefore the quantity
of the subject matter of any man's landed
property. When the water had subsided
& the surface of the land had become
dry enough to be subjected to the
operations of agriculture need took
place for the operations of measurement.
By these operations no inconsiderable
expenditure of labor & time became
necessitated. By whatsoever defalcation
could be made from this expenditure so
much real good — so much accession to
the aggregate quantity of the national happiness was
produced.
