Posology

Origin of Trigonometry.

It was found by experience that
after actual measurement made
of a part of the whole number of
the boundaries by which the subject
matter of each proprietor's
property was encompassed the
situation & extent of other part
of those same boundaries might
be ascertained without the trouble
of actual measurement: might
be ascertained in a word by inference:
by the relation which it was found
that the unmeasured part bore to
the measured part. To have made
observations of this sort was to have
made so many discoveries in
that branch of art & science
applied quantity-learning which in
process of times received in Greek
the name of Trigonometry — having for
its function the measurement of
surfaces bounded respectively by 3 right
lines. Here then is a sort of historical
proof that the propositions now referred
to the head of trigonometry and not
