Essay on Posology.

Pure mathematics & mixed mathematics — a
distinction this than which nothing can be more familiar.
Pure mathematics, mathematics unapplied to use;
mixed mathematics, mathematics actually applied
to use. Suppose a portion a sort of mathematics
in such sort pure as not to be capable
of being put to use: what wd it be good for?
Nothing — What title wd it have to regard?
None — Oh but says somebody — it will strengthen
the labour employed upon it — it will
strengthen the understanding — strengthen?
Yes so to be sure it will — So wd chess,
so wd whist — but is this any reason for playing
either at chess or whist? No: independently
of the pleasure they afford which is
indeed a reason & a very good
one — but a reason which has nothing
to do with the other. For no species of mental
exercise gymnastics in the can any strengthening it may be
capable of applying be with propriety as a use
of it so long as there is any other by which
with equal strengthening some use — any other
use can be made.
