Useful as chess is to those engaged in

Greatest happiness
Chrestomathia
Chess.

Beginning

§. 1. Use of posology & considered in its totality.

The greatest happiness of the sensitive community — of
the aggregate of sensitive beings, — that is the end in view to which
every thing that is said or done by man should be subservient
conducive and subservient — every thing, that is sought thought said or done, in any
part of the field of thought and action — in any branch
whatsoever of art and science — should be conducive and
subservient: every object of possible pursuit that stands
situated without this line, is plainly worthless

Among those branches the situation of which is most
remote from that this same universal end is that which in the all-
comprehensive table attached to the work stiled Chrestomathia
may be seen designated by the name Chrestomathia

But remoteness is not unconduciveness

To shew how it may be purged of every thing
that is not thus conducive — is the object and business of the
ensuing paper

Useful, chess is — to those engaged in it at the time they
are engaged in it — thus far and no further. If it strengthens the
mind, so does chess: it strengthens the mind by giving
by the means of habit, strength to the faculty of attention,
that faculty on the strength of which all advances that
can be made in the field of art and science depends.

But whatsoever portion of labour and time is bestowed
upon any pursuit, by which as above no ulterior str addition
can be made other than as above to the stock of happiness
may be made is capable of being applied to other pursuits may by which
additions to any amount may be made to the amount of
that same desirable effect result: to those then it should be applied in preference
