Abstraction as
the instrument o

by which
this distinction is .

6. Abstraction the mind carries in the first
place at the subject matter of the branch which
requires regards form as well as quantity next and lastly
that which regards quantity alone without
regard to form. Of these the first mentioned is
by another and scanty appellation termed Geometry
literally the art of measuring the Earth
whereas there is nothing on or above the Earth
which is not measured by it the one last mentioned
is Arithmetic as above.

comparison of form —

7 Notwithstanding in the progress of abstraction
that which regards number without form
is the last subject matter arrived at evident
it is how simple an object is presents to the
conception — how simple and thence how easy
to lay hold of in comparison of form with its
altogether infinitely diversified modifications
This then being the easiest to consider
this accordingly is the first that we shall take
into consideration.
