1. The expository and 2. the historical.. By these
appellations may be designated and distinguished two different
modes of communicating learning the information belonging to this branch of
art-and-science.

The Expository regards
present state.
2 By the expository understand the presenting to view
the matter of the art and science in the state at which it has
place at the time of the formation of the work in and by which it is that
treated of.

The Historical, all
prior states
3 By the historical understand the presenting to view the
several steps or say degrees by as far as ascertainable. by
which it came to arrive at such its present state.

Modes of teaching

2. the interrogative
4. 1 The didactic and 2. the interrogative. By these
two appellations may be designated and distinguished the two different
modes of teaching or say making communication of the
information belonging to this same branch of art and science

The didactic, what
5. By the didactic mode understand that in which in
a direct way and in the first instance the communication is made,
the master or say teacher or instructor stating in a direct way
to the Scholar that which requires to be stated: and thus, without
calling for any statement on the part of the Scholar Learner.

The interrogative, what
6 By the his interrogative mode understand that one in
which in a less direct and simple way the information is
to be lodged or say planted, in the mind of the Scholar Learner: the
Master stating Teacher stating in each instance by with form of an appropriate question or say interrogation the topic in relation to which it is desired that by
the Scholar the information in question should be received and possessed: and
the Scholar therefore giving expression to that same information: which of course he cannot do without
having already acquired it
