Applicable to all
branches of art and
science are the above
divisions: not applied to
these, till now are the
historical mode of
learning, or the interrogative
of teaching

7. Applicable alike to all or most of the several other branches of art and
science are the above modes of learning and teaching. The
use of and reason for bringing them to view on the present occasion is that
to the branch of science here in question neither the historical mode of learning nor the interrogative
mode of teaching are by the author of these pages known to
have ever been employed.

1. Positive. 2 Conjectural

8. As to the Historical mode of learning,
8. Positive and conjectural. By these appellations
may be designated and distinguished two distinguishable
submodes capable of being employed in learning and
teaching this same branch of art and science in the historical mode

The positive Historical is the
customary

9 By the positive historical mode understand the mode
in which what belongs to history is commonly delivered.

The conjectural is
a mixture of the positive
and the inductive.

10. By the conjectural m submode understand
the substituting to the ordinary positive submode or say form of positive
statement that of conjecture in so far as matter belonging for
to the positive mode happens to be deficient

That which is delivered in the conjectural form is
matter deduced from such matter as has place in the
is the result of teaching that which has been presented to view in the expositive form mode with the addition
of such portions as have been presented to view in the historic
positive submode of this same historical mode
