Ch. 2 Uses

Use of Uses
§.1 Need of uses assigned

1

1.
§ II Uses of Posology.

Sec. II Uses of Posology or say Posology its
uses

2.
At outset After general meaning of a
science explain its
uses.

To a work which professes to teach what
belongs to any branch of science the first thing
which should be said of it after some extremely
general explanation of what is meant by it, should
be what is it good for.

3.
Dr Fordyce on being
asked the use of what Chemistry was
good for said "What are you
good." Answers more
satisfactory given by
Torbergman & Professor
Fairish.

Dr Fordyce a man of no small eminence in his
day for his knowledge of what the comparatively little
of what at that day was known of Chemistry but
not much less so for his bluntness on being asked one
day what Chemistry was good for gave for sole answer
to this question another question viz what are you
good for answers somewhat more satisfactory than
this were given Anno or thereabouts Torbergman
in his Treatise on the application of Chemistry
to the arts of common life and abundantly more so
of late by at Cambridge by Professor Fairish.

4.
Of indication at outset
of use of everything after
the following among the
uses
1. foretaste of the reward
of his labor —
here a pleasurable
inducement.

Of the indication thus proposed to be given at the
very outset of the usage of every thing that is to
follow divers uses may be mentioned any of one of
them sufficient.

1 One is — the foretaste how slight soever
which it affords to the learner of the reward
which whatever labour he may feel
inclined to expend upon the subject he
may expect to receive if in his eyes
these uses should any one of them present
themselves as affording promise of making payment
of his labour here is an inducement of the
pleasurable kind
