Diffusion & advancement
what.

Diffusion and advancement by one or other of
these words may be designated every operation by which
any addition can be made to the usefulness of posology
in its unapplied state: by diffusion understand has place
in proportion as exercise is given to the number of minds
to which communication is made of the species of information
in question; advancement in so far as proportion as
addition is made to the quantity of it which has place
in the mind in which the largest quantity has place,
or to the aggregate of the quantity which has place in all
the minds taken together of those by in which any quantity
of it has place

Diffusion most increases usefulness
because

Of these two operations, diffusion is manifestly that
from which the usefulness of this branch of art and science receives is capable of
receiving the greatest exercise: and this on two accounts

1. because number of benefitees
coextensive with globe's population.

1. In the first place, because by diffusion the number of the
persons by whom the benefit in question is capable of receiving encrease,
to the number is susceptible capable of receiving it by
diffusion there is no other limit than that which applies to the
whole population of the globe: which to the usefulness of it
made by advancement no addition is capable of being made
by simple addition without diffusion nor otherwise than in proportion
to it.

2. quantity already known
sufficient for practical use.

2. In the next place, because (so at least it is supposed)
of the matter capable of being applied to practical use — or say
to the addition of the quantity of pleasure or diminution of the quantity
of pain having place in the population of the globe, small if any is the
quantity that remains to be added to that of which the most amply
informed of the present population is at are already in possession.
