In the three preceding cases, the intention to
the producetion of the evil is direct: in the following
cases it is indirect: the evil infli is not the end ultimate object
but it is the means.

it is an act of Self-preservation.

If it be done to ward off the mischief to be done to
you with a view of warding off some injury that upi are then in the very act of performing, or meditating to
perform, it is an act of Self defence.

When a burthen is imposed on one party, for the
purpose of making amends to some other party for the
pains he has suffered, it is an act of compensation or
reparation.

Thus the same act, the same evil, according to
the nature of the intention and of the motive on the part of
the agent, bears a different denomination, and is
arrange accordingly some either among the class of pernicious
