to the sensation it succeeds but still less favourable
to that state of calm reflection which is requisite
to give a firm union to establish (that important) between the two ideas above
spoken of, [which it is the object to produce]
This is the
an emotion of Joy which the patient feels
upon reflecting at the reflection that his suffering is over.

The gradual and protracted scene of suffering produced
by the combination of punishments we
are now considering is much more favourable
to the establishment of the wished for union effect. By
solitude a man is abstracted from those emotions
of friendship or enmity which society inspires
from the ideas of the objects their conversation
is apt to bring to view: from the apprehension
of the disagreeable situations their activity threatens
to plunge him into expose him to, of employment pleasurable or the pleasures in which
they sollicit him to engage. By confinement
