Imprisonment exd

Solitude is only one of three ingredients that
appear to have been administered in its most
effa efficacious form. The scene was of gloomy
but not dark. The circumstances of the diet is
not mentioned. The impression was made
without it & before there could be time for trying
it.

"I remember an instance" says Mr Hanway
(Solitude incl imprisonment p.87) "some years before
the law for proceeding to sentence upon evidence of
a notorious malefactor who would not plead. It
was a question whether he should be brought to
the press, but the Jailer privately recommended to
the Magistrate to try solitary confinement in
prison. This produced the effect for in less
than 24 ho twenty four hours, the daring artful
felon, chose to hold as his hand at the bar, &
quie submit quietly to the laws, rather than remain
in such a solitary state without hope.

The same Gentlemen (in p.74) mentions a set
of Cells provided for this purpose in Clerkenwell
Bridewell by order of the Justi Justice of Peace for that
division. One of the Magistrates he says assured
him "that every person committed to those solitary
"apartments, had been in a few days reformed to
"an amazing degree" the apartments though solitary
are not said to have been dark nor is any thing
said about the circumstances of diet.

Among the other effects of Another feature in m imprisonment, and
that of & of a nature very opposite to that
which has just been sp spoken of, is that of
being obliged to associate with a promiscuousmixing all the Prisoners together, or what is little
assemblage of Prisoners, a hardship that canless pernicious as no care is taken in the classing
scarcely have ever been the result of a directof them, this placing a numbers together in the
intention on the part of the government or thesame apartments
confining a number together in the same room.
