Quasi-Imprisonment &c examined.
it he separates him from them; and does not,
like Simple Imprisonment, lead him to form
new ones of the same stamp. Turned adrift among
strangers, he cannot expect all at once to
find meet with a set of companions prepared to join with him in
any scheme of wickedness.⊞ ⊞ Should he make advances and be repulsed, he exposes himself to their honest indignation, perhaps to the censure of the Law. Should he even fall the company
in with he happens to fall in with, be persons as profligate as himself, it would
to be some time before he could establish himself sufficiently
in their confidence. If he continues to
make war upon mankind, it must be with his
own single strength. He may find it easier
to betake himself to Charity or to honest labour.
He is separated not only from the objects which used to
furnish him with motive to committ crimes
as well as from those which used to furnish supply him
with the means to committ crimes,⊞ ⊞ but from those which used to furnish him with the motives The Alehouse he used to drink
at, or the strumpet he used to cohabit with.
The company he falls in he meets with in the new scene
he enters upon will either be honest or at least for aught
he can know to the contrary, will for some time seem to be so.
In the mean time the censure disapprobation he may hear them
express for habits resembling those to which he subjected
him to the punishment he is undergoing may
co-operate with that punishment and contribute
to the exciting in him one m that salutary aversion to
those habits which is stiled Repentance.
