Quasi-Imprisonment &c considered examined

Banishment is apt to be rather more serviceable
than Relegation. This is owing principally to the greater chance
there is that the language of the foreign nation
he is thrown into by Banishment should be stranger
to him, than that of the province he is thrown
into by Relegation. This circumstance would encrease
the difficulty he would be under of acquiring
the confidence (above spoken of) necessary
among person partners in iniquity. The Laws too
of the foreign country being new to him, ought may on that account be more strike
him with greater terror
formidable to him than those his native Laws,
which perhaps he had has been accustomed to evade.

3. In this respect Banishment is apt to be rather
more serviceable than Relegation. If the delinquent
is of an age to be susceptible of iniquity be still of that age at which now assuming other
habits of life habits of life are easily acquired, and is not insensible to the advantages
of a good reput reputation, his exile ma if the character in which he appears be not known will
be the more likely to contribute to his reformation,
from his finding himself at a distance from those who were witnesses of his infamy & in a country in which
his endeavours to obtain an honest livelihood will
not be liable to be obstructed by finding himself an
object of general suspicion. The same discouragements
to honesty will not exist in country

But even though he were to carry with him him
to the place of his banishment his original
vitious propensities, he would not find the
same facilities for giving effect to them especially
if the long language of the country were different
from his own. The laws too also of the foreign country
being new to him may on that account strike
him
