circumstances: 1.st The strength or intensity of the malevolent
affection in each particular person, and 2. The number
of persons who entertain it. This general sum body of ill-will then
may be [resolved into] estimated as being the product of two
dimensions.
1.st that of their Intensity, resulting from its mean average
strength in the breast of such particular person. 2.ly That Their
of extent, resulting from the number of persons thus concerned.
This distinction must not ought not to be overlooked, since
we shall have occasion to make frequent application of
it to practice. It may be sufficient barely to mention the circumstance
of Duration a circumstance the influence of which
is too obvious to need insisting on.
