species of punishment that is liable to destroy
the tone of the mind and to produce an
incurable state of melancholy. The first impression
will however in general be of a have the most salutary
nature
/\ N.L. tendency. I /\ If in order to talk advantage of
this favourable disposition, a minister of religion
possessed of the requisite qualifications is employ'd
to visit the delinquent and pour the balm
of consolation into his wounded conscience he acts
with an advantage that can never be look he
can never hope to experience in the ordinary
exercise of his functions - he is the only friend of
the delinquent and appears only in the light of a
kind benf benefactor.
This course of punishment thus consisting of
solitude darkness and hard diet is as has been
already observed when combined a sort of discipline too violent
to admit of it being employed exept except for a
short periods: if it were prolonged it would could
scarcely fail of producing madness, despair or more
commonly a list stu stupid apathy. This is
not however the place for fixing the length of time
during which it m aught to be employed for each
species of punishment: it aught to vary according
to the nature of the offence - the degree of obstinacy
betrayed by the offender and the signs he
syst symptoms he betrays of repentance. What has
been already said is sufficient to shew that the
mass of punishments in question may be employed
with the most advantage simultaneously.
By mutually aidat each other; and in order to produce most speedily the affectationed even the sort
of food aught allowed aught not which in respect of quantity
aught not to exceed what is necessary to avoid
the producing a dangerous degree of debility, should
in respect of quality be rendered unpalat aught not
