Sinecures

2. Second property unproportionality. From this
property results the enhancement of the mischiefs just above mentioned.
A In each instance supposing a Sinecure
falling vacancy in the very inch of time, still against
its being neither too large in its amount nor too small
in its amount the odds are as infinitely infinity to one.
Is it too large in its amount? Such as would appear
too large, even in the eyes of those to whom, in whatever
title it actually belongs to judge? Here then by the very
supposition is so much waste – waste by the amount
of the difference.

Is it too small? – still the same result. Too
small as it is, still it is asked for because there is
nothing else to ask for; still it is given, because there is
nothing else to give.

But the public is not thus quit. It being by the
supposition considered as too small, what remains is a
demand for still remaining for another is the consequence.
larger Thereupon Sooner or later another becomes vacant: but of
what magnitude? perhaps this other is as much too great
in the other case too small: no matter: at the its excess of magnitude
neither prevents its being given – given to the individual for whom
of itself it is too great, two added to so much in its being
added to that other which he has already. Of a Sinecure
given up – given up either absolutely or so much
as in exchange for a better thing, does the whole fifty years reign
present so much as a single instance? Not one I must should
I expect to find: while of sinecures added to sinecures, as
well as of Sinecures added to official places, what a multitude
there is, the
printed lists will shew.
