Parl Reform

A patent was accordingly made out: a patent by
which the said George Lord Arden was and no doubt duly constituted and
as well as appointed "Principal Registrar of the said High Court
of Admiralty, High Court of Appeals for Prizes, and
the High Court of Delegates .... to hold the same"
(meaning probably the same Offices though no such of any such thing
thing as an office no preceding mention had has been made)
from the death of Godfrey Lee Farrant Esquire, the
then Registrar, for and during the term of the natural
life of the said Charles George Lord Arden.

The God Mars did his part: for, to the war which
had at that time had just ceased, succeeded at no great
distance of time, the American war. But as it is
the fate of some Gods as well as of some Fairies to be continually at work hard labour and
at the same time to be find themselves as continually thwarted and disappointed
so happened it in the present instance. The
God mars passed: in the theatre in question for a most distressing prodigious length of time but there were other Gods that forgot
to dance to him. The American war came: but it
might as well not have come: for, so perverse was
this plebeian Registrar, this working and writing man – this Godfrey
Lee Farrant, that the Office was not rid of him till
above six and thirty years after, viz. till the 9th of
August 1790: during which whole time, dignity in so
far as depended upon this triple Office chain of offices Clerkships, and meritvirtue, present in the
person of the head and future contingent in the
persons of the several members together and to be begotten
of this noble family had to wait for its reward.
