Sinecures
From the year 1760 to the year 1810, Lord Lieutenants
of Ireland, 22: – whereof of such extraordinary ser-
meritorious in the degree in question, but two three, viz. The late Earl
of Hartford, the late Earl of Buckinghamshire, and the new Earl of
Hardwicke: not so extraordinarily meritorious, 19: viz.
the Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Halifax, the Earl of Northumberland,
the Lord Viscount Weymouth, the Earl of Bristol, the Lord Viscount Townshend
Earl Harcourt, the Earl of Carlisle, the Duke of Portland, Earl Frampton,
the Earl of Northington, the Duke of Rutland, the Marquis of Buckingham,
the Earl of Westmoreland, Earl Fitzwilliam, Earl Camden,
Marquis Cornwallis, the Duke of Bedford and the Duke of Richmond.
From 1760 to 1810, First Lords of the Admiralty, 18:
whereof extraordinarily meritorious as above, but one: viz.
the Earl of Egmont: not extraordinarily meritorious, 17:
viz. Lord Anson, the Earl of Halifax, Mr George Grenville, Sir
Charles Saunders, Sir Edward Hawke, the Earl of Sandwich, the
Lord Vincount Keppel, the Lord Viscount Howe, the Earl of Chatham,
Earl Spencer, Earl St Vincent, the Lord Viscount Melville, the Lord
Barham, Lord Howick, Mr Thomas Grenville, the Lord Mulgrave.
In time of peace and in the instance of a non-professional man it seems not very easy to say, by what
possibility to a person in that situation it should happen
to be able to render any service of any such sort a nature
to which the epithet extraordinary would with any propriety
be applied: any and upon the whole any such mass of
service that the pa emolument the patronage the power and
the dignity attached to it would not without an
addition to any such amount or indeed to any amount
compose a sufficient retribution for it.
In time of war, and in the instance of a professional man,
the difficulty seems not so great. The Earl of Egmont was a non-professional
man, and the time in which he served in that high situation
was the whole of it
a time of peace.
