Parly Reform

Marlborough was a consummate General: but he
was a no less consummate courtier: and to what degree
he loved money and that money in his eyes money
possessed at least its full value, is a fact not less matter little
notorious than his most splendid public services. Living
when he did, he became what he was. Serving first
under Gaines then under William to another of
whom any better court could be made than by a
soldier who courted active service, he qualified himself
for shewing himself alone in possession of superior command
the greatest general of his age. Under the female
reign which succeeded, service at Court devolved upon
the wife and left the husband free for that public
service the result of which is seen in history furnishes so much matter for the history of that time.
Service the result of which, while it encircled his head
with laurels, put such a mass of money into his purse:
What would have been his course had he lived in a
reign of Jim ? He would have gone to Ireland Dublin
and acted the King's part in that theatre till a £12000
a year Clerkship became vacant: that secured he would
have come to transferred his headquarters to Windsor and
seen there service in it the character of Vice Equerry till a Registership
been served with assiduity had become vacant: when not thus on duty, he would
to make himself amends for the fatigue of duty he would
have been abed during half the day and played at sat playing
have the night – till an opportunity offered of putting the
convening upon his fortune.
