If a man does not do his duty he will degrade
himself was, it is plain, the notion of Lord Nelson.
So long as he protects money without being prosecuted for it a man will not degrade
himself, unless it be considered supposed of him that he does
his duty, was at the period of their respective appointments,
if conduct be an interpreter a line of thought, the
notion of the Honorable Turnspit and of the Noble Office
Clerk.

Under Edward the 3d, if he we may believe his Chancellor,
it was Newness trends the man. Under George
the 3d, if we may believe the those directors of his Counsels,
and the companions of his rides (not for as I have better things to speak of Chancellors)
it is money makes the man: and so long
as he has but enough of it, what else he may have
or not have is not worth a thought. As to his fitness –
fitness for any his situation, this so it be a high one it sufficiently
established by those penal inflictions to which
hung over all hands that with pens in them shall
presume to question it.
