Familiarization with them destroys principle & spirit in
the contributing people.
It is not therefore so much by their amount as by their
principle that they are pernicious: the principle in which
they are supported – the only principle in which they can
be supported as a principle by which whatsoever is most
pernicious may with equal facility be supported: it is
the principle of an exclusive regard for personal and private interest are
either disregard for to public good. Those who on
that principle support this writ on the same principle
and with equal facility composure support whatsoever else is
most pernicious to the public so it be but being at the same time
profitable to themselves: they will suppo on the same
principle and with the same facility as they support a
sinecure list to its present amount, they would support
a list of the same kind to any greater unagreeable amount,
they would support embrace war for to continue the
profit of that class of sinecures: they would embrace sale and denial of
justice for the sake of those sinecures by which men the same
or with other rich men are made rich are fattened at the expence of justice.
