§. 2. Actual contents of the list here given given in the Report.

Let us now see observe to the accomplishment of which
of the above good purposes the endeavours of the framers of the
list in question appear to have been directed, and in so
far as directed, how far any such purpose have been
aimed at, how far in what degree it appears to have been accomplished attained.

The first thing to be done, but that not qite so easy as could be wished altogether an easy
one, is to give an account of the matter actually
contained in this list which this list actually contains.

of Divisions, three: constituting each of them the
matter of a separate No in the Appendix's Definitive words. England –
Scotland – Ireland. Nos 80, 81, 82.

Columns in each, three: and the matters of these three
columns expressed in each the several Nos by the same heads or titles
1. Of Column 1 the explanation must for evident reasons be postponed: the use of it
not being intelligible but through the medium of the other two.
⊞ ⊞ interventions Column 2 2 bears for its title Names of Establishments,
and in this column under this title are inserted
Names of Departments – Names of Sub-departments Boards contained within departments in those
Departments – Names of many-seated Offices or clusters
of Offices contained in those sub-departments – Names
of single-seated Offices contained in those many-seated
offices or clusters of Offices – Official names of the
Officers by which such single-seated Offices are respectively
filled and words or collections or words by which
in a variety of modes ways more or less oblique intimation
seems to be conveyed or intended to be conveyed most commonly either
of Sub-departments, or many-seated offices, or
single-seated offices, or at any rate but in some instances of sources of
expence which it seems not very easy to refer to anything
which can properly be termed an office.
