§. 3. Insufficiency of those contents to the above purposes.
Of the above six purposes it is it seems not very easy to
find out discover so much as one which appears to have been
so much as aimed at in the framing of this list: not
so much as one that can be said to have been accomplished
by it: imperfect is the degree in which it can with
respect to any so much as one of those purposes be found to be
so much as conducive.
The labour industry of the Finance Committee of 1797-8
had travelled traversed over if not the absolutely the whole, at
any rate by far the greatest part of this same field.
Of Offices in great numbers they had upon their plan given an account,
in here surely was laid at least a foundation at least laid, which such as
a basis and standard of reference, such as need not have been disdained.
The offices thus touched upon exhibited by that Committee
were they all the offices which the in its present official system
affords? a few words for affording to afford giving this satisfaction would a very
few words would have sufficed have required but few words.
For the purpose of consultation facilitating reference, a list, in some
order or other might here in this fresh Report have been of use.
To the list number of Offices as it stood
at that time, had any addition been made since?
At the end of that original list, a supplemental list exhibiting
the additional ones
