Sinecures
Of a stock of articles thus multifarious, to form a
bare inspection a decision on the question is it compleat
or no would probably by even the most practical experienced
and informed eye
eye be found impracticable.
But there is one sort of order for the discovery But supposing the existence of omissions, for the discovery
of them there is one sort of order which would
not afford any the smallest slightest facility. This order is the
alpha order of the alphabet: and this in so far as
any serviceable principle or order has been at all looked to is the principle
which in the list in question, has (as hath been we have seen)
been pursued.
But Another order there is by in which considerable facility
might have been afforded to such discoveries of that nature.
This is a list sort of systematical arrangement or classification
of the whole stock of Offices, meaning on this
occasion single seated Offices as being the elementary
parts of which the official system is composed.
Applied to these objects objects of this nature the principles of
good method order might to a mind of a speculative turn afford
no less amusement, than and to an honest mind placed
in a practical situation no less useful service than
if applied to stocks or shares plants or stones.
Logic has its methods by which if correctly pursued
compleatness on any such occasion may be secured,
may be rendered little less than secure.
