Sinecures

Among the Offices which, are or might have been
are being contained in the establishment, are or might
have been contained in this list, there are many to
the designation of which the systematical order would was
have been in a peculiar degree suitable, the alphabetical
order in a peculiar degree unsuitable. I
mean speak of those which of which there are so many, the
denominations of which not presenting to the eye
of an ordinary reader the great bulk of readers any idea of themselves,
find in the designation of the Department or Sub-department
to which they belong, and thence the
company in which they are placed, the only concise
explanation, imperfect as it is of which they are
susceptible.

Hanaper or Clerk of the Hanaper, Chaff Office,
Petty Bag Office, Sixpenny Writ Office – What
idea would denominations such as these present
to an unlearned eye? mind? It would set a wandering
without end in the maze of mystery. But when Place
them under the head of the Court of Chancery, it is then
understood that by these mysterious words are designated
so many good things which are at the disposal of
the Chancellor, and by this means that inf sort of
information is conveyed, which forms the whole of what
an unlearned mind is qualified to receive.

In so thick a darkness the only additional light which
is capable of being reflected from the subject into an unlearned
mind is composed struck of the figures by which the value of these
good things are respectively expressed. These sums may be considered
as the constituting so many translations of the original
grimgribber into
plain English.
