Sinecures
Scotland furnished supplied the Appendix with 2 numbers masses of information Nos..
Ireland furnishes supplies it with the same number.
In the case instance of Scotland, upon the face of their very titles, the two masses of information
were, it has been seen, logically speaking disparate; mathematically incommensurable: we shall find the information from
Ireland will be seen darkened by the same cloud.
No 73 Scotland – Sinecures or Offices wholly or chiefly
executed by Deputy. No 74, Scotland – Offices executed
by Deputy.
No 75, Ireland, – Sinecures or Offices wholly or
chiefly executed by Deputy; and paid out of the Civil
List of Ireland. No 76, Ireland – Offices executed
by Deputy.
1. Sinecures which are such to every body being in
themselves distinguishable enough from those which are such to
the principal alone the business being done by another person, who on that account is called a Deputy,
why not distinguish them here. Was this of the number
of those things which cannot be done? This cannot be
said: for in the very next No viz. 76 it is actually done,
is at least as the title shows undertaken to be done.
2. Offices wholly or chiefly executed by Deputy: –
another distinction source head of information with which we are tantalized but
not supplied. Question the same, answer the same, in
this case as in the one just mentioned. In No 76 the "offices"
are all of them not as are "executed by Deputy". Executed?
but in what proportion? Wholly or chiefly? – Wholly is what everybody
will of course understand unless an where no intimation is given to
the contrary. This But of many things there are some which are
not executed not only
