Sinecures
The first desirable property accomplishment one should naturally have expected to
see in
The first desirable property which on an occasion of this
sort we should naturally have expected to see have seen aimed
at at least in this production by the Honourable Authors, is
all-comprehensive: that of the subject object of enquiry
viz. the Sinecure Offices, and the
or Joint-life interests all the instances which
the establishment affords should have been brought
brought to view, or at least been endeavoured to
be brought to view: and that in so far as to
their knowledge or apprehension the list of those actually
brought to view failed of being equal to thethe same with a compleat list
of those actually in existence, the amount of the deficiency,
in so far as it was known, together with
the cause of it in so far as they were known should
also have been brought to view.
The reasons why this point of perfection should have been endeavoured
to be accomplished seems neither unobvious nor
inconclusive –
1. In so far as any of the articles in question failed
of being brought to view in so far were would the design the end public object
in view whatever it was by which the enquiry was prescribed
left defeated unattained.
2. To the individual concerned the disclosure being
in its nature such a sort of result which in general
would be rather unacceptable, in the instance of whatsoever
persons the disclosure failed of being made, the failure
would be in danger of being placed to the account of favour
a suspicion of partiality
would be apt
to be excited handled, and
along with it in the
breasts of those who
were not partakers of
such favours, a sort of sense of injury.
