On Comparing together these five articles, it is not without the eye of a plain
surprize that a plain man can observe with in a man is sufficient to observe, nor surely can it be easy for any eye
proportion how more to regularity howsoever easily to observe without some degree of surprize while the whole decreases keeps on decreasing
the superiority of the part to the whole increases: but as
to the exact line of by which the connection between these two connected
series of increment and decrement is governed, in that
as is a question which must be left it better to leave to mathematicians.

Leaving this in the character of a speculative question
to those speculative men, there is one circumstance belonging
to the series is not without its alarming tendency to us
plain men, and that in a very practical view, in our character
of contributors, taxable and taxed contributors.

Observing that as the total amount thus decreases
the partial amount of that same total encreases and
that which the total amount has been rising from £1,980
got up to £ not less than £4,201, an apprehension no less natural
than alarming is that of seeing the a longer continuance
and with it a further decrease in the series of Total Amounts
– more and more total amounts more and more
each of them less than the preceding, and the smallness of
those we have seen already, already fallen or risen
which shall we say to a most alarming rate. For
although where the annual amount is £4,201 the
Gross total amount is but £51, and although on a
former occasion occasions some reason was given us for hoping that
the Total amount gross amount was either all or more than all
the money that went found its way into the pocket of the favourites of royalty and
fortune, and that Total Amount was being but another way of
saying Total annual gross amount, this might peradventure
be the case with this paltry little sum – this £51, yet upon
second
