Sinecures
All this while, Though not altogether inapplicable to the joint subject of
Sinecures and Reversions, which is the very subject on the
carpet – I am not altogether without apprehension, lest this illustration
should be regarded as a digression: accordingly and for
the purpose of showing in what point of view it may
serve as by way of an illustration, I hasten to observe that
to propose for the consideration of the reader whether the
sprinkling in of those words and figures figures of arithmetic, in a moment
of good humour without any such dull labour tiresome exertion tedious occupation as
might on each occasion have been necessary to the
ascertaining determining whether on each this or that respective occasion be any
one of them would upon examination be found to fit the
occasion better than another – whether I say mean a
practice of this sort by way of relaxation⊞ ⊞ in imitation of the
Clerical pastime above
mentioned, a game
of this sort may not have been engaged in, at the suggestion
of some Honorable and learned members if in the composition of the
Committee, any Honourable Gentleman of that description was has
ever been to be found – a game to be played at the
expence of us without doors, who were made to pay all
expences, and of whom as of other rubbish when found within doors,
can not be too regularly cleared – instead of being played
by them at the expence of one another, as when Mr Harrison
received a cushion in his face from the hand of Mr Oliver
Cromwell, or where the of Mr
received became the subject of remarks to the pen and kin
of Mr .
