Sinecures

In the yard of By a farmer whose purpose is to encrease his stock
a ewe or sow and a bitch a ram or boar and a dog find themselves together
for a moment on one side of a hurdle which their
destined males are for the same moment in the other.
The attention of each male being engrossed by the
female of his own
his own female, no discord so it is that notwithstanding the difference
of habits and propensity, peace is not broken peace remains unbroken, and
as the learned author of the Commentaries would say
still every thing is as it should be Rebus sic stantibus
as they say in law. suppose the hurdle removed, every thing would be
still more perfectly as it should be.

But suppose the clown farmer – not that any farmer
such as this is so weak) – after driving off the boar the ram
and the dogs her who should have been the dogs mate
suppose him to turn the dog in upon the ewe and
the sow – from so preposterous an arrangement what better result could more reasonably
be expected to ensue, better than partial persecution
and universal uneasiness and discontent ill humour, the instead
of being comforted the unfortunate females would be tormented
and the stock of the foolish clown farmer would receive no
encrease.
