Sinecures
If in this a conception of this kind there be on the part
of the Honourable Gentlemen anything like error be impartable
it will be matter of consolation at least, and
perhaps to their feelings perhaps even of honour, to
share in it with have for a in it hold it in conjunction partnership with Mr
Justice Blackstone.
In article 43 for example we see in the
supposed character of the custodies of Idiots and Lunatics we
behold a noble Lord, viz. Edward Lord Thurlow.
There a Lordship is being a person, and every thing is
as it should be.
But Unfortunately in the very next article, article 44, we find
this same noble person not only degraded not only
from the class of persons into the class of things, but in
the class of things thrust down into that division of it
which is occupied by filled with fictitious entities: for it of
the Office for executing the laws concerning Bankrupts
it is there predicated an intimation is expressed and that but too plainly that itself is Edward meaning
doubtless the same Edward Lord Thurlow: and if
the office is Lord Thurlow can it be otherwise than
that the Lord Thurlow is an office?
In like manner in article 58, by a transformation
more incongruous than was ever exhibited in pantomime at
we find no less a person than a Duke, viz. the Duke of Grafton changed metamorphosed
into a Seal office: viz. the Seal upon of the
King's Bench and Common Pleas.
