Sinecures
An Office granted in reversion is where the office in
question being already in the possession of some individual
a grant is made of it to some other individual or individuals,
to take effect so soon as the interest of him who
in possession shall have been determined: viz. by death,
dismissal on conviction of misbehaviour, or dismissal without such conviction by superior authority,
according to the nature of his first interest granted in it.
Property in official rights has been made inheritable
in the same way as property in land.
Instances have probably existed where they have been made
subjects of grant in tail: instances more than
one still exist of offices held under grants in fee.
In both these cases the successive takers may be consi
dered
as so many reversioners following on each
other in a succession to which to which to the duration of which
unless limited by the evidence of the legislature may it may happen to
be coeval with that of the government itself.
Of interests of this description no mention is
made in any of the title of any document exhibited
by the Committee: but instances will be found
among the articles of information exhibited by them
under other heads.
