As often as the terms joint-lives – an office holder
under a grant made of it for joint lives is mentioned,
the addition imparted by the words and with benefit of survivorship
i.e. for the life of the survivor, must always be
understood: for no be the benefit what it may, it must be a rare rather a singular case indeed of a man would accept of it under
any such condition as that his of it should be terminated by
the expiration of a single life not his own if he
could obtain it for the last longest of two lives, one of them
his own own, or even for his own alone: and there
is nothing in the nature of the case that should present
to the a patron the author of such a grant, any
inducement for to take clog upon the value of it with by such a
diminution as could subject him to the mortification
of survivor surviving for any length of time the
loss of it.

A man however who has no interest enough to
obtain a grant favour of this sort will, of course, in proportion
to the strength of such his interest, endeavour to
give to it the greatest value he can contrive to give
to it, relation being had to his domestic circumstances the circumstances in which
his family is placed. In general he will prefer
his own life to any other single life: but if he has
a wife, or a child for whom he is desirous of
making provision at his own expence, it may happen
to him to obtain it for the life of such wife or such
child in preference to his own: much more if it
be in his power to obtain it for ever such has their own
with benefit of survivorship. This consideration has having given
birth to will enable us to account for anomalies of this sort
several of which will
present themselves in
the course of the ensuing
pages.
