Sinecures
Of the interest which a man Except in
exceptions excepted
Every overpaid Office has, in proportion as it is
overpaid, a tendency to slide into this gulph to mount be
borne aloft into this sacred empyrium upwards into the empyrium of Sinecures.
One part of the business duty there is to the performance of the which no
character however great ever manifest any reluctance
howsoever high his situation: this consists, as everyone
understands without need of being told, in the exercise of the rights
of patronage.
Other Some offices there are which even as to
other parts of the business duty attached to them are preserved pretty
effectually preserved from the accident or debarred from
the advantage of the transfiguration. These will
with equal readiness be understood to be those which
by not shutting so effectually and universally open the door to
a seat in one o other House the House of Commons. But the duty
really attached in those situations is not the patronage
excepted the duty which the name title of the Office
would impart but the duty of attendance in the
House.
But though every office that exists would will in process
of time alone required to a certain degree of maturity
mount aloft and together with the great or whatever fortunate character
its possessor be translated into the Epicurean
Shower the seat of undisturbed repose no service is
on this account neglected: the duty of every office
continues somehow or other to be discharged: the a perpetual
encrease to the number of official offices being partly the
cause and partly
the effect of the encrease
given to the several number
of the non-effecive
ones.
