Parly Reform Sinecures
The situation of Honorable Gentlemen in a
Committee of this sort is beset with peculiar difficulties a delicate and invidious
one. Beneath the Individual interests rise up in
swarms against them from all quarters. To enable them
to do their duty to the public some require a spur,
others the appearance of one. For this is not only the
case in which to engage him to do what he is inwardly
desirous of doing, a man stands in need of obligation
and even force, or at least the appearance of it.
The greater the number of In so far as there are any Honorable Gentlemen
which it may happen to this humble attempt to find
standing in this latter predicament, the less will be any abatement
which any service it may be capable of rendering
to the public experience forms any unpleasant sensations
produced in the breasts of particular individuals.
