§. 4. Opinion of the Finance Committee of 1807-8

Thus much for the first and original Finance Committee.

If the light thrown on the subject by this first first Committee
has not been either very strong or very useful, the
obligations which the public has received on this same
score from the second and revived Committee
will scarcely appear to be very great.

By the first Committee from Sinecures in contradistinction
to Pensions, two results have been noted set down marked
in the character of evils, not as so much as one in
the character of a good. After this Thereupon they speak of
those same pretended Sinecure Offices as in the character of useful things – inasmuch as
there are some of them, viz. "Sinecure Offices of high
rank, that may be usefully employed in particular
instances: whereupon introduced as we have seen by
an as, follow some examples of those instances.
Those instances have of which it can not be said that
we have not got enough – have as the whole of
them? Not one indeed. No: we have no such good fortune: for those
are but samples: the word as shows as much – so that
what other applications remain in it is impossible
for us to know. We shall know too soon
when and as they are brought forward by existing circumstances.
