Thus stands the matter upon the ground of the only
principle to which in the instance of the only class of
persons exposed to the temptation of committing the
large scale offence, the of good taste and the
love of case, of that case which consists in exemption
from the labour of hard thinking will suffer
a man to employ or acknowledge.
To be saved upon occasion from Against Septembrization
upon occasion their only safety would be
in the principle of utility: the theoretical, and speculative i.e. and dangerous
and odious principle of utility: by which be
an act ever so odious, any even ever so justly
odious, not a grain of punishment is admitted of which, without
giving a preponderant encrease to the evil in the
shape of delinquency, can be spared.
