Sinecures

True it is that by the removal of this cause, viz
the sinister interest in this shape the shape in question in the operation of
which the system of factitious delay vexation and expence had its
source the mass of evils correspondent and evil to the
several ends of justice had their source took their rise very little progress would
be made towards the care of the disease. This one
cause removed others would continue operating in unabated
force.

1. In the first place there would remain the system itself
to which the influence of that sinister interest has given birth
that has been produced by the influence of that sinister
interest, and which so long as it continues what it is
is sufficient to afford a regular and never failing undiminished
crop of those evils, all at the same height at which they
are felt at present.

2. In the next place though the self-regarding part of the sinister interest
were removed compleatly weeded out of the ruling bosoms, there would
remain a sort of sympathy, a restricted and sort of
narrow and misplaced though most naturally placed benevolence having for its
objects those who at present are partakers in the supposed
extirpated sinister interest, and for its victims the whole
remainder of the people. In every other fellow lawyer every
lawyer beholds not only in name but in affection sympathy, a brother,
in every one non lawyer who is not a lawyer, a stranger:
a stranger whose place is without the pale of sympathy,
in every other fellow lawyer a man formed trained to be an
accomplice; in every non lawyer a man born to be
a victim and a dupe.
