4. Not only in the fraternity of lawyers would a
great part of the sinister interest, and the whole of the
mass of interest-begotten prejudice still remain, but that a mass
immense mass of prejudice of the the same in kind and in origin
which by the united force of that sinister interest
and that interest begotten prejudice has been so deep implanted in the bosom of the people.

Be the commodity what it may – sugar,
gall, virtue, vice, praise – proportioned to the demand the supply strives tends with
perpetual tendency energy to adjust itself to the demand
will naturally be the supply. Under a tyranny system of misrule, the
more afflictive severer it is, the more abundant the stock of
praise: the g louder and more troublesome the
cries of the afflicted would be if heard, the greater more pressing the
need is of a concert of praises in which if uttered
they may be drowned. The more sincere a persuasion
is, the more impressive it is taken to be when endeavoured
to be communicated: and with so much
reason as the man of law has to be in love with his
own work, it would strange indeed indeed if
of the torrent of praise he is continually so indefatigably pouring forth
upon it no part were sincere.

⊞ It is with the hand of law as it is with Abyssinia or Timbuctoo. Precluded from viewing seeing into visiting it with his own eyes, the
non lawyer in the conception he forms of it in relation to the it
system is finds himself reduced to the necessity of pursuing his faith
in the of those by whom it has been who have travelled over it, and in
in the case of this part of Terra incognita, the witnesses being
all of them either bribed or biased all agreeing on one story,
all speaking of it as if an Utopia, misconception is an
effect no less unavoidable
on one part than
misrepresentation is on
the other.
