To that unavoidable mass of delay vexation and expence which
is the work of Nature is added a another which being an hundred fold
and finite more than a hundred fold greater, has been the work of the man of law.

To of the people justice, or what goes is called by that
name is denied, to the other truth sold. On the plaintiffs
side the power of the judge is in the hands to the eye of the man of inequity rendered a sure and
safe instrument of oppression and extortion, on the defendants
side of profitable fraud. these possible errors in
quantity and proportion which against which, under the care
which has been taken for keeping truth from divulgation
it is impossible for sincerity itself to be secure, all this
is not only as true as the existence of the sun at noon day
and but, if not as clearly seen as universally felt to be so.
No matter. Means are not wanting for engaging men Powers exist in sufficient force are not wanting strong enough to triumph that have been seen to triumph over to resist the force of the most convincing evidence. Religion
has power to
The evidence of sun is strong, but there
are powers in nature that are still stronger. Religion has triumphed
over it in one two in one quarter part. Law triumphs over it
in another. That the mass of evil such as they feel it to be what they
feel it to be they can not utterly disbelieve: but
being told that it is unavoidable, they believe it to be unavoidable.
In vain is it to say to them it is not
unavoidable, for if you will look there, and there and
there, you may see where it is avoided, nor could
society hold hang together, if it were not avoided to a greater
extent greater than that in which it is felt. No matter: to
understand the difference and agreement between the two
cases requires a degree of insight which they have not
and which ever has been taken and continues to be
taken that they shall not have.
