Torture

9.1 Relation between
torture & punishment. –
Torture its two senses.
1. Pain, from whatever
cause, & on whatever occasion,
if bodily & intense. p.29.

2. Intense bodily pain
applied by power to the
purpose of compulsion. p 29.

Applied to the purpose
it is punishment: but
which if inflicted ceases
the instant delinquency ceases. p.29.

By this torture is distinguished
not only from
compulsion itself, but from
any punishment employed
as a cause of it. p.30.
