Punishment
With an act of omission vengeance as also with an act of
coercion, an act of restraint, an act of prevention
an act of compulsion or constraination, and an act
of torturing an act of punishment agrees in the
same manner as a genus agrees with its a species subordinate
to it. For each Every act of vengeance
is an act of punishment, though it is not every
act of punishment that is an act of vengeance
Punishment may have either of two objects: it
may be directed to either of two ends: vengeance
or person's coercion. It is may be said to be directed
to that ofhave vengeance for it's object when the ultimate
motive was the satisfaction of taken at the
thoughts of the party's suffereing. It may be said
to have coercion for it's object when the ultimate
motive is the satisfaction taken at the thoughts
of the influence which the punishment is
thought likely to exert over the conduct of
a certain person or persons the idea of the suffering of the
party aforesaid producingaffording satisfaction no otherwise
than as a means of bringing about that compassing that effect.
