of Intentionality,
what —
Your intention may be said to have regarded it ultimately
if the event of my suffering the pain was the
very Event the contemplation embarras of which produced the desire,
which was the Motive to your Act: if your desire looked
to that and looked no farther: if my pain and that
alone was what you wished for: My pain may, in
this Case, be said to have been the ultimate as well as
direct object of your Intention: the act you did order
to produce it may be said to have been ultimatelyconclusively as
well as directly intentional with respect to my pain. It
may be said to have been intentional in the highest and
fullest degree.

The Middlemost Your intention may still be said to have regarded
it directly but not mediately only, and not ultimately,
if the event that produced the desire was, not that pain
itself, but some other event, for the sake of which You
produced my pain looking upon that pain as a neces:sary
