An Act of
Torture. If being an Act of compulsion the object of it was my
doing something that it appeared to be in my power to
do, upon the spot, for instance, telling you something You
wanted to be informed of, which done, and not before,
the pain you were putting me was to cease, and that
pain were of the bodily kind, your act is what is commonly
understood to be meant by an Act of Torture.

An Act of
Prevention The same Act which might called an Act of Restraint
with respect to one, as laying a restraint on one, may be be called
an Act of Prevention with respect to any mischief expected
at my hands: to wit as preventing the production
of such mischief. The same observation remark may be made with
regard to any other person, in whom the apprehension of
a pain he sees me undergo may be productive of restraint.

may as such be an Act
either of Vengeance or
