Punishment distinguished & defined
to have been performed by me, or any one else, the Act You
performed in order to practise on me that Pain may be stiled
as well either an Act of Punishment as an or Act of Vengeance.
If my pain was the direct but not the ultimate or conclusive
object of your intention, the ultimate object being
the prevention of some mischief apprehended from future similar
Acts or omissions of mine or any other person, the Act
you performed in order to produce the Pain in me, may
in this case also he stiled and Act of Punishment.
Punishment therefore, we may say, may be directed
to either of two ends: vengeance or coercion.
If my pain was not any direct, but only an oblique
object of your intention, your Act cannot with reference
to your intention be said to have been an Act of Punishment.
