C. Punishment distinguished & defined
profit of that party (by affording him the means of pleasure)

the way of Compensation satisfaction: in other words Compensation is
amends or reparation

An Act producing such effect and done with a direct
intention of producing it, may be stiled an Act of Compensation.
Now in order to obtain the means of making Compensation
it is necessary that a burthen should be laid
somewhere. The laying on this burthen will produce
Pain. But this Pain being obliquely only and not directly
