internal sensation itself, the pain that is endured; the smart, for instance, of a wound. In another the exterior situation of things by which such sensation is produced; for example the impression made on the body: the wound itself. Ascending still the higher in the chain of causes and effects it may be made to signify in a third sense the Act or Motion or the combinaion of external exterior Acts and motions, by which the above mentioned situation was produced; for example the stroke which made the wound. + In these two last senses, the word punishment may be considered as being used for shortness instead of saying an act Act of Punishment.
These variations, especially after having been thus noticed will I hope produce no very mischievous ambiguity: for the context will determine readily enough in each case in which of the three senses the word is meant to be employed.
Ascending higher still it may be made to signify in a fourth sense the external exterior act or motion the act of the will which gave birth to the exterior acts and motions last mentioned the resolution to pain with, which, being, first framed framed originally in the breast of the Jud</unclear> magistrate passes on from them & by system of machinery more or less complicated, gives motion to the arm of the executioner
