I productive of evil
otherwise in consideration
of evil antecedently
sustained, be the
ultimate object, the
act is an act done
in gratification of
antipathy:
but is evil the less
an act of punishment
evil, the antecedent injury, you have no longer one the case still
an act of punishment vengeance. What you have
is not an act performed in and for the gratification of
mere antipathy. But the supposition having for its
author or agent the man in power the legislator or the
judge, it is still - it is not the less an act of punishment.

In these cases, to
save the punishment
from the reproach of being
ultimately intentional
the existence of antecedent
evil in that the prevention
of which is the object of
the punishment may
sometimes be pledged
deriving pleasure from senses a source from which he
derives no such pleasure.
Here the punishments inflicted on the of heresy,
have the punishment attached to this or that gratification
many of the irregularities of the sexual appetite.

(a) In these cases of this sort prevention of evil supposed to be produced by the obnoxious
acts in question will of couse in case of remonstranceobjection be
alledged as the final cause of the punishment thus inflicted.
But that in general reality it has not been the final cause
that in reality the object in view has been in these cases no other than the
gratification of the passion os antipathy seems proved plainly enough
indicated on the one hand by this viz. that the evil has been purely assumed
m specially particularly indicated much less proved and that of in
any way indicated, in comparison being non attempted to be
made between evil in this from this source and evil having its source in in obnoxious acts
of any other kind, the
